What brought about this new product from Microsoft?

The creation of Microsoft’s .NET framework was a strategic response to the change in the competitive landscape. With the creation and rapid spread of the Internet and client—server models, software companies were forced to adapt from single user software to multi-user software.

The major challenge that arose was communication across multiple platforms; there were compatibility difficulties. The Internet links computers of all types through the World Wide Web, but not everyone uses the same software, programs, Operating Systems, applications etc. Sun's Java was the first to conquer this problem and provide the first web-based language compatible across many platforms. Java was favored among many software developers because it was based on the open source Operating System Unix, which was anti-Windows.
